The honest answer: ChatGPT helps before and after, not during

ChatGPT is genuinely useful for international calls — just not in the way most people expect. Here is when it helps and when it does not.

Before the call: ChatGPT is excellent

Preparing what to say. Tell ChatGPT the purpose of your call and it will draft a clear, culturally appropriate script. "I need to call a hotel in Kyoto to ask about a room with a mountain view for late August. Draft the key points."

Translating specific phrases. If you expect to encounter certain questions ("what is your check-in time?", "do you accept foreign credit cards?"), ChatGPT can translate them in advance so you are prepared.

Understanding cultural norms. "How formal should I be when calling a business in Japan?" ChatGPT knows. Use this before picking up the phone.

Learning the right vocabulary. If the call will involve technical vocabulary — medical, legal, or industry-specific — ChatGPT can walk you through the relevant terms.

During the call: ChatGPT does not help

Once you are on a live call, ChatGPT cannot translate both sides in real time. It is not connected to your phone. The other person cannot hear ChatGPT's output.
