South Korea rewards visitors who can navigate its phone culture. The best restaurants in Seoul are often booked weeks in advance — by phone. Clinics offer same-day appointments — by phone. Local markets, local tours, local everything tends to go through Korean-language phone lines.

Here is how to access all of it without learning Korean.

Situations where you will need to call in Korea

Restaurant reservations — Michelin-listed spots, popular barbecue houses, and local 맛집 (matjip, "taste places") typically do not take walk-ins and require calls. Naver reservations exist but are often Korean-only.

Medical appointments — South Korea has excellent healthcare and relatively low costs for outpatient visits. Clinics near expat areas sometimes have English staff; elsewhere, a phone call in Korean is the only way in.

Delivery and local services — Staying in a Korean apartment for a week? Coordinating food delivery, repairs, or package delivery usually happens over the phone.

Customer service — Korean banks, telecoms, and e-commerce platforms (Coupang, Naver Shopping) all have Korean-language call centers.

Korean-specific tips

State your name in Korean phonetics if asked. Names are often asked for reservation confirmation. "Park" in Korean is 박. Spell it out if needed — the transcript will show what was entered.

Say "주민번호 없어요" (I don't have a resident number) at clinics that ask for a Korean ID — they will accept your passport number instead. AI Call will translate your explanation automatically.

Keep a screenshot of the transcript. Confirmation numbers, addresses, and times are all captured in the bilingual transcript at the end of the call.

For everything else in Korea — travel, customer service calls, family communication — AI Call handles the full range.
