What iPhone cannot do natively

Before getting to the solution, it helps to be clear on what Apple's built-in tools can and cannot do for call translation.

iPhone Translate app: Excellent for face-to-face conversations — hold the phone between two people. Does not work for phone calls. 20 languages.

Siri: Can answer "how do I say X in French?" Cannot translate a live call.

iOS Live Voicemail (transcription): Transcribes voicemails in English only. Not a translation feature.

No version of iOS — including iOS 17 and iOS 18 — has built-in live translation for outgoing calls to real phone numbers.

How to translate live calls on iPhone: step-by-step

Step 1: Download AI Call Get AI Call from the App Store. Free to download; free minutes included.

Step 2: Open AI Call and tap "New Call" You will see a dialer and a language selector.

Step 3: Select the other person's language Tap the language field and choose the language of the person you are calling. AI Call supports 100+ languages.

Step 4: Enter the phone number Type or paste the number you want to call — include the country code for international numbers (e.g., +81 for Japan, +34 for Spain).

Step 5: Tap Call AI Call dials the number. The other person receives a normal phone call.

Step 6: Speak naturally When the call connects, speak in your language normally. The other person hears your words in their language. Their replies come back to you in yours — in under half a second.

Step 7: Review the transcript After the call ends, AI Call displays a full bilingual transcript. Save or share it as needed.

Face-to-face translation on iPhone (bonus)

For in-person situations — a restaurant, a store, a hotel lobby — you do not need to make a phone call. Switch to face-to-face mode in AI Call. The interface splits the screen for two speakers; each taps their side to speak, and hears the reply in their language.

This covers the same use case as iPhone Translate but in 100+ languages instead of 20.

Quick tips

  • Grant microphone access when prompted during setup — required for call translation.
  • Use Wi-Fi or a strong cellular signal for best latency results.
  • Enable "show transcript during call" in settings so you can read along in real time.
