What trips up Spanish to English translation
False friends
Some Spanish words look like English words but mean something else. A good translator handles them from context; if a sentence sounds odd, ask the other person to say it another way.
| Spanish | Means | Not |
|---|---|---|
| embarazada | pregnant | embarrassed |
| actualmente | currently | actually |
| constipado | has a cold (Spain) | constipated |
| éxito | success | exit |
| asistir | to attend | to assist |
| recordar | to remember | to record |
| carpeta | folder | carpet |
Numbers, dates and names
- Numbers come in pairs. Phone and order numbers are often read as two-digit pairs (“cuarenta y ocho, veintiuno” = 48 21). Repeat the full number back.
- Dates are day first. “03/04” means April 3 in most Spanish-speaking countries. Confirm the month by name.
- Two surnames. Many Spanish speakers use two last names (María López García). Write down both.
Regional Spanish
The same thing has different words across countries: carro / coche (car), celular / móvil (cell phone), computadora / ordenador (computer). In Mexico, ahorita can mean “right now” or “in a little while”, so ask for a time.
