When AI Call is a useful option

Your phone lacks compatible built-in translation

AI Call uses its own calling workflow on iPhone and Android. Check the current store requirements, your two languages, and the destination number. You start the call through AI Call; opening it does not translate an already connected carrier call.

You need a hotel or business phone to ring

Dial the regular number with its country code. The recipient answers their phone and speaks their own language. This is different from sending a browser link that someone must open.

You also need voice, video, or text conversations

Use separate AI Call modes for internet voice and video or in-app chat. Call Links let voice/video guests join in a browser; translated text chat requires both people to install AI Call.

Check languages, costs, and connection before calling

Choose the language pair. Select the actual languages in call settings. Language support in a text translator does not prove support for spoken phone calls.
Check the call route. AI Call places a translated call through its service. Built-in options operate within the supported device workflow. A Call Link needs a browser and internet on both sides.
Read the price shown. AI Call is free to download, with calling minutes and paid options shown in the app. Carrier charges may still apply to native phone calls. Compare the cost for your destination and duration.
Try a short conversation. Check whether both people understand a name, time, and number. Network conditions and speech affect translation; this comparison does not establish an accuracy or speed winner.

Do I need AI Call if my phone already translates calls?

Not necessarily. If your built-in feature supports your device, region, languages, and calling workflow, try it first. Consider AI Call when you need a dedicated calling app or its separate voice, video, and in-app chat modes. Check compatibility and pricing before you call.

Can I translate calls on an iPhone without Apple Intelligence?

AI Call is a separate app rather than an Apple Intelligence feature. Its US App Store listing required iOS 16.0 or later when checked on September 12, 2026. Check the current listing, language selector, and destination before downloading or paying.

Does the other person need an app for AI Call?

For a regular phone call placed through AI Call, no. The recipient answers on their usual phone. For an internet voice or video call, you can share a Call Link for browser joining. In-app text chat requires both people to install AI Call.

Which option is best for English–Chinese calls?

AI Call offers an English–Mandarin calling workflow. Built-in alternatives vary by device and current language support. Check Mandarin in the actual call settings and run a short test. Do not assume Mandarin, Cantonese, and every Chinese dialect are interchangeable.
